OpenOffice 3.1

I've discovered that the new OpenOffice (version 3.1) integrates quite nicely with Drupal (Or rather, with WebDAV). It allows for easy posting straight from the word processor. True, Microsoft Office has had this functionality for some time (so I am told) but I do believe that with this release we have finally reached the point where you really need to be doing something very special to justify running Microsoft Office instead of the open source equivalent.

Now I am no writer. I don't play one on TV. I hardly ever use Open Office for ANYTHING (The last time I used a spreadsheet was to calculate profit per day for FarmVille on Facebook – Yes... I am that lame). So I can hardly be considered an authority on office desktop applications. What I do know is that everything that I consider to be necessary for an office application is there.

I can type words. I can change fonts. It has an outline feature. It supports tables. It prints. It even supports mathematical formulas. It is compatible with 99.9% of the population that uses Microsoft Office. It exports to PDF. It has a spell checker.

And now, it also allows you to blog from it, or alternatively, export the document to Google Docs (or even Zoho). All in all, not bad for a free product.
